Why Do We Celebrate Father’s Day?

Ever wondered about Father’s Day? When did it start? Why is it celebrated on different dates in different countries? Here are the answers—plus, some great ideas for showering your dad with love and appreciation this Father’s Day!

Father’s Day Around the World

In Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Fiji, Father’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in September.

However, in more than 70 countries worldwide (including the UK and US), it is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. So why is Australia’s Father’s Day celebrated on a different date than the majority of other countries?

It’s probably because Australians heard about other countries celebrating Father’s Day, thought it was a good idea, and decided to celebrate it at a slightly later date instead of waiting a whole year for it to come around again. It’s also possible that it was deliberately placed in September because there are so many other holidays being celebrated from April to June, and not as many in September. With something as arbitrary as this, there’s really no need for the whole world to celebrate it on the same day.

It looks like Australia adopted the idea of Father’s Day in the 1930’s. In this 1936 article in the Newcastle Sun, Father’s Day appears to be a brand-new event: “A new day for the Calendar is ‘Father’s Day,’ September 6.” Ever since then, the first Sunday in September has provided Australians with an opportunity to show their love and appreciation for fathers.

In 2017, Father’s Day falls on September 3rd. What are you planning to do to celebrate?

Gifts for Dad

Take a look at retailers’ advertisements, and you’ll see that traditional Father’s Day gifts include sporting, fishing, and camping items, grilling accessories, and the ubiquitous tie. These are all great ideas, but what if your dad already has everything he needs for those hobbies? What if past Father’s Days have provided him with more ties than he could possibly wear?
